48 hours in Prague!

I went to Central Europe for 13 days during summer a few weeks ago. It was a fairly cheap trip considering it costs me approximately 700-800 pounds for 13 days including accommodation, transport and food. Thus, I will like to blog my experience and hope to be able to give some tips to anyone who is interested in travelling to Central Europe for holidays.

This time I traveled to (in order) Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria and Slovenia. So I will start off with Czech Republic.

Day 1

Prague, Czech Republic was my first destination. Took an easyjet flight from Manchester at approx 1.30pm and I arrived at about 4.35pm.

Note: Prague is one hour faster compared to United Kingdom. (Diff time zone)

Flight: 38.16 GBP per person

From the airport, take bus 119 to Nadrazi Veleslavin. The bus stop is located right outside the airport. Nadrazi Veleslavin is the last stop. From there, take the metro (Line A) to Namesti Miru. It's about 10 mins walk from Namesti Miru metro stop.

Transport: 40CZK/1.22GBP (30 minutes ticket including a luggage ticket)

As I was traveling in a group of six, we booked an apartment at Hotel Brixen for a two night stay. The apartment was neat and tidy.
It is about 30 mins walk away from Charles Bridge. Location wise aint the best, but Wenceslas Square is just about 10 mins away. Metro is also located nearby if you do not want to walk. However, the air conditioning in the hotel wasn't working throughout our stay. Do take note about this especially if you are traveling during the summer.

Accommodation for two nights: 36.00 GBP per person

We had dinner in Kolkovna Savarin.

    Leg of goose 249 CZK

Old Czech KOLKOVNA platter 900g 329 CZK  1/4 roast duck, Moravian Sparrows (pieces of roast pork), smoked meat, smoked beer sausage, white and red cabbage, three kinds of dumplings (bread, fat and potato)

suitable for sharing between two people

Roast duck 1200g                       With a side of bread dumpling and sauerkraut

I shared the platter with Walton and the roast duck with the others. A scrumptious meal indeed. Cost me about 9 pounds including a refreshing glass of lemonade. Might not be the best restaurant in Prague but it is worth a try.

Dinner: Approx 9 pounds

               Kolkovna Savarin
                 Na Příkopě 10,
   110 00 Hl.m. Praha-Praha 1 - Staré Město,
                Czech Republic

Shared a Trdelnik with the rest after dinner. It is filled with chocolate and vanilla ice cream. Probably the best we had in Prague. The stall is located outside Kolkovna Savarin. Couldn't remember the exact price of this. I think it cost abt 140 CZK/4.28 GBP.

Dessert: Approx 0.72 pounds per person

Day 2

Woke up early and off for breakfast at Cafe Lourve.

Complimentary bread. All of them kinda tasted odd to me.One of them is really salty while the other one is way too sour.

I ordered the French breakfast. It comes with an omelette with ham, few slices of cheese, a croissant and a glass of juice. The breakfast was just mehhhh. Nothing special.

Introducing the Czech breakfast. It looks unbelievably sad and it is indeed quite sad. haha. no other comment for this. The whole set consists of a hard-boiled egg, cheeses and hams, not forgetting an apple cake which tasted more like a banana cake. I definitely won't recommend this place to anyone.

Breakfast: 4.25 GBP

        Café Louvre
        Národní 22, 110 00 Praha 1,Czech Republic

We then head off for a full day of sightseeing. First made our way to the Petrin Hill. You have the choice of walking up the hill or paying approx 32 CZK to take the funicular. Being the lazy bunch or at least me being the lazy one, all of us paid to take the funicular.

Note: Do prepare coins if you plan to take the funicular. As the ticketing machine only accept coins.

Transport: 1.00 GBP

A view from the top of Petrin Hill

                   Prague castle from Petrin Hill

We only walked around the Petrin Hill. We weren't interested in paying to enter the Petrin tower. There are a few other attractions on the hill but we didn't actually explore the place.

A scoop of pistachio gelato from Angelato

We then took the funicular down to the foot of Petrin Hill. There is this really good gelato shop right opposite called Angelato. The pistachio gelato is just soooooo good!! They have weird flavours such as rice and olive oil. Do give it a try! It's only about 40 CZK for one scoop.

Gelato: 1.22 GBP

On the way to Prague Castle

Another trdelnik otw to Prague Castle

After gelato, we walked towards Prague Castle and unknowingly managed to go all the way up skipping all the stairs. On the way up, we shared another trdelnik with ice cream with strawberries and one glass of iced tea. Such a fat life. Got up to Prague Castle and walked around for about an hour. Entered the St. Vitus Cathedral. The place served as quite a good view point if you would want to have a view of Prague.

Trdelnik + Iced tea: Approx 1.00 GBP per     person

                                                              St. Vitus Cathedral

The skies then start to turn dark and here comes the rain. On the bright side, it was just drizzling We always have issues with bad weather when holidaying. Remembering the rainy day we had in Venice, Italy last year where I slipped multiple times no thanks to the slippery floors and my bad shoes. Still we walked towards Charles Bridge and hope to find a place for lunch.

We then walked to the Old Town of Prague and had lunch in this place called Bohemia. Nice, cozy place. :)

                                                        Pork Goulash

                         Another pork dishhhh

They serve pork goulash here. Probably the only place I can try goulash since I can't eat beef.

Shared goulash and another pork dish with Walton. Each of us ordered a glass of homemade lemonade. Lemonade in Prague comes in different flavours. Tasted really refreshing as well especially after a heavy meal.

             Bohemia
                    Husova 160/23,                      110 00 Praha

Lunch: Approx 8 GBP

                  Prague Astronomical tower

We then went to walk around the Old Town of Prague and ate more trdelnik. We ate so much trdelnik to the fact that I got so sick of it. We even tried the one which got famous on 9gag. So disappointing. The bread is hard and stale, filled with low quality ice cream. I think u will have better luck with the kiosk by the road.

                     Krusta Artisan Bakery,                 Karlova 44,
      Prague 110 00,
           Czech Republic.

      Good Food Coffee and Bakery
         Karlova 160/8,
          110 00 Praha 1,
         Czech Republic

Two trdelnik from both places: Approx 1.20 GBP per person

We then walked aimlessly around Prague and chilled by the side of the river with the view of Prague castle behind us while waiting for sunset. Not forgetting the free wifi from a nearby hotel. It was an overall very relaxing day in Prague. We then had dinner in a Chinese restaurant in Wenceslas Square called Hong Shun. Hesitated entering the restuarant as the photos of the food do not look appetizing at all but we despooo. We are extremely asian ppl who cannot survive without asian food. hahahahaaaaaa. But the food turned out to be fairly good. Its really cheap too. Cheaper in comparison to the food in UK but definitely not cheaper when u compare it with Malaysia. Ordered 6 dishes to share with a bowl of rice for everyone. No photos taken coz I dun think anyone will be interested in Chinese food in Prague. We then head bak to our hotel.

Dinner: Approx 7.00 GBP per person

Day 3

As we decided to sleep in, we bought the
breakfast buffet vouchers from our hotel.
Quite a good breakfast buffet for its price
in Europe.

Breakfast: 4.00 GBP per person

We then decided to just rest in our room before heading out to grab a 'light' lunch and the train to Bratislava, Slovakia at 1.45pm.

And the 'light' lunch turned out to be a lunch in a nearby Korean restaurant.

I guess we will just eat all the way regardless being full or hungry. Their set lunch is very worth it but I went for Kimchi soup as I was craving for it. I guess the food is just okay. Don't order the ramen. It tasted just like shin ramen.

Lunch: 5.00 GBP

After that, we head to the train station and managed to catch the train with minutes to spare. We bought and printed the train tickets before hand. Will write a short entry about traveling with train across Central Europe just in case you guys want to know how. It is definitely more convenient to drive across countries but none of us want to drive as it is tiring and we do not want to risk driving in an unfamiliar place.

So I guess that is the end of my 48 hours from Manchester to Prague. In short, I think Prague is very beautiful. I have always wanted to visit Prague after watching it being featured in one movie. Really beautiful and much cheaper than other European countries.

TOTAL SO FAR: 117.77 GBP
